I had this idea a while back and decided to post it here for ease of reference.
*******************
I'm going to assume stuff off-planet is there, but either in a parallel dimension or nearby solar system for relative ease of reference.
(ex. Galaxy High, Masters of the Universe, Thundercats, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Sectaurs, The Mighty Orbots, Robotix, Visionaries)
I'm also going to go for relative popularity for the mainstays and use the more niche ones to fill in the connections.
Going to skip previous decades popular characters (ex. DC, Disney, Hannah Barbera, Marvel, Popeye) just to limit the focus as well as Star Wars.
I'll stick with the earth for the most part, with a slant towards North America.
1. So the big ones are
- G.I. Joe
- Transformers
Both have huge reach across the planet and would have serious influence. They also have serious connectivity already so any adjustments needed are minimal.
I'm using the setup of the G.I. Bureau as a response to Cobra as the beginning of this era.
The other major touch-point is the awakening of the ark.
Other series that have an earth-based influence that could be shoehorned in somewhere is as follows:
- Bionic Six
- Centurions
- C.O.P.S.
- Inspector Gadget
- M.A.S.K.
- Pole Position
I could very successfully argue that these are responses to transformer level technology either directly through acquisition or independent development through study.
2. Why are there smarter animals - human/animal hybrids and how did they form?
I'm going to steal from another fairly popular series for the explanation from tmnt: the krang has been doing experiments for generations to prep for ultimately terraforming the planet.
While krang is the most popular one, there is actually a lot of krang's race running around, doing something or another. A lot of the experiments were done in Canada (for isolation)
which explains the relatively high population of enhanced animals (ranging from the Littlest Hobo, to the Raccoons).
Some of their weirder experiments are everything from Barbapapa, the Killer Tomatoes, the California Raisins and the Madballs. :D
3. Magic and the supernatural in the 80's verse
Magic is rare but has an emotional and moral connection. Often magic is a focal point through an item or artifact. A few powerful ones don't even require any training.
- Defenders of the Earth
4. There is also an increase in supernatural activity from beyond the grave. this has resulted in an arms race between the living and the dead in some areas.
- Beetlejuice
- The real ghostbusters
5. Near Dimensions:
The following are transdimensional locations that are somewhat connected and have a slightly different set of rules but are relatively easy to get to:
- Carebears (their cloud city is technically in a pocket dimension)
- Captain n the game master
- Dungeons and dragon
- Inhumanoids (technically deep within the earth, but it's actually a separate dimension inside the core).
- Kidd Video
6. Misc
These are just a random grab bag that would be easy to integrate with the minimal explanation given:
- Jem
- Mr. T
- Lazer Tag Academy
5. Prehistoric earth
Just wanted a placeholder for series that takes place before the common era that hasn't already accounted for:
- Dinoriders
6. Post-apocalypse earth
There are 3 major post-apocalypse so the easy way to deal with all of them is they all happened but at different times.
- Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future
- Rock and Rule
- Thundar the barbarian
